Power Outage Safety Checklist

Stay safe and protect your home during a power outage

When the Power Goes Out

Immediate Steps

  1. Check if it's just you - Look outside. If neighbors have power, check your circuit breaker panel.
  2. Report the outage - Call your utility company or check their outage map online (use your phone data).
  3. Unplug sensitive electronics - Computers, TVs, and appliances can be damaged by power surges when electricity is restored.
  4. Leave one light on - So you know when power returns.

Food Safety

  • Refrigerator: Keeps food cold for about 4 hours if kept closed
  • Freezer: Full freezer stays cold for 48 hours; half-full for 24 hours
  • Don't open the door unless necessary
  • When in doubt, throw it out

Staying Cool in Houston Heat

  • Move to the lowest level of your home (heat rises)
  • Close blinds and curtains
  • Use battery-powered fans
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Go to a public cooling center if the outage is extended

Generator Safety

  • NEVER run a generator indoors, in a garage, or near windows
  • Place it at least 20 feet from your home
  • Never plug a generator directly into a wall outlet
  • Use heavy-duty outdoor extension cords

When to Call an Electrician

  • If your breaker panel is buzzing, sparking, or smells like burning
  • If you have power everywhere except one circuit
  • If your lights flicker or dim when the power comes back
  • If you notice any electrical damage after a storm
